Magdalene College is one of the highlights of a tour with Scholars Punting Cambridge.
On the river, it is located on an idyllic spot adjacent to the bustling quayside. In the summertime, it is a popular place where you will find both students and locals sipping a beer whilst enjoying the view of the college.
the college was founded in 1428 as Buckingham College. It was originally a Benedictine hostel for student monks. It was deliberately located north of the river in order to separate the monks from the sinful temptation of the city life.
The college was refounded as the college of St Mary Magdalene in 1542, after the biblical character who is said to have been a follower of Jesus Christ. One of the college benefactors was Thomas Audley, it is said that the odd pronunciation of Magdalene is derived from his name.
