Scholars Punting Cambridge had been prepared for the usual busy Easter weekend only to find record levels of rain which flooded the river and made punting dangerous. Sorry to all those people who booked tours, but were not able to attend due to rain, we did our best to refund you all as quickly as possible.
How the flooding affected other areas of Cambridge
Luckily the city centre remained above the flood zone so tourists and locals alike could enjoy the shops, restaurants and colleges. As usual, the River authority kept the city centre water fast, but it didn’t burst its banks. Granchester, on the other hand, was like a giant lake, some unfortunate folks in Newnham experienced flooding in their houses. Downstream of the city centre in Chesterton a Council truck ended up in the river and a giant crane had to be used to fish it out.
What does the rest of April and the Easter Holidays look like?
Today was glorious sunshine and lots of folks came punting because they were not able to go when Cambridge was in flood. The River has quickly gone back to its normal slow pace. We hope that the additional rain forecast for the coming weeks will be lighter so that we can continue to operate.
