Punt past The Wren Library of Trinity College Cambridge, designed by the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren. The library is home to some wonderful historic texts and has some unusual design quirks from the outside too, making it a highlight of a Cambridge punt tour.
Christopher Wren is one of the most celebrated British architects of all time. Born in 1632 he also had a proficient knowledge of mathematics and physics, as well as being an anatomist and astronomer. He redesigned 52 churches after the Great Fire of London and most famously designed St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
Dotted around Cambridge are a number of buildings and bridges designed by Sir Christopher Wren, but possibly most famous is the historic library of Trinity College, located on The Backs of The River Cam. Finished in 1695 the library is more of a museum today, open to tourists and an excellent place to pop in after seeing it from a punt on the river in Cambridge.
Trinity College in Cambridge is the largest and wealthiest of the colleges with a huge academic prestige as well. Notable alumni include the writers Byron, Shelley and A.A. Milne, original works of whose can be found in The Wren Library, alongside first folios of Shakespeare and the first rules of the world’s most popular sport!
